Whenever measurements are used to quantify or verify process parameters or product performance, it essential that the measurement system used provides adequate:-

  • Accuracy
  • Resolution
  • Repeatability
  • Reproducibility

Measurements system that do not meet these criteria may produce may provide inaccurate and misleading data and cause poor decisions to be made by operators, quality engineers or seniors managers. Typical problems caused by poor measurements may include:-

  • Inappropriate adjustments to process parameters
  • Acceptance of non-conforming product
  • Rejection of conforming product
  • Increased levels of scrap and rework within the process.

Measurement system analysis resolves these problems by assessing the performance of the measurement system and calculating the process capability - indicating the level of confidence that may be placed in the data provided.
